Training and Oversight - Trusted by Advisers, Endorsed by Results

At TERN, our approach to compliance is simple but powerful: ‘prevention is better than cure’.

Our system has been tried, tested and continually refined over the last 12 years - underpinning Equity Release Supermarket’s proud record of zero upheld FOS complaints. It's a model that puts adviser success and client outcomes at the centre, with quality control built into every stage of the advice journey.

DIRECT DIALOGUE, NOT DELAYS

Where many networks slow advisers down with compliance bottlenecks, TERN takes a proactive, real-time approach:

  • Dedicated Quality Controllers (QCs) are on hand for instant support
  • Direct dialogue between QCs and advisers replaces faceless inboxes and delayed replies
  • Problem cases are reviewed and discussed quickly — helping keep business moving
  • Ongoing feedback ensures advisers learn and improve continuously, not just reactively

Our goal? Fewer errors, fewer complaints, stronger outcomes - for both the adviser and client.

TERN ACADEMY — TRAINING THE RIGHT WAY, FROM DAY ONE

Before giving advice, every adviser experiences the TERN Academy – a structured, staged training programme designed to embed our tools, standards and compliance processes.

Stage 1
Initial Training & Assessment
  • Full guidance on smartER, documentation, Consumer Duty and the advice process
  • Advisers complete roleplay-based case assessments
  • No advice is given until this stage is signed off
Stage 2
Attaining Competence
  • Live file reviews, observed meetings, risk assessments and KPIs
  • Supervision and regular development reviews
  • Final sign-off only granted after quality, conduct and documentation meet the required standard

Training is flexible to the individual’s pace and experience, but always robust. Most advisers progress to CAS within 6 months, with full support available for those who need longer.

ONGOING OVERSIGHT — RISK-BASED, ADVISER-CENTRIC

Once competent, advisers continue to receive tailored support via our Training & Competence (T&C) framework:

  • Bi-annual performance reviews with our Conduct Risk & Compliance Consultant
  • Dynamic supervision levels – from low-touch to full supervision depending on risk profile
  • Risk assessments based on CPD, experience, complaints history, file quality and business volumes
  • Pre-checks are carried out on higher-risk cases, with post-checks completed on over 25% of all files
  • Increased support available for those new to the role or needing development

Performance conversations are always documented and fed into our central risk framework - creating a 360° view of adviser quality and risk.

At TERN, compliance isn’t a blocker — it’s a business enabler. Our system protects advisers, firms and clients alike, while helping you give great advice with confidence.

The Equitec systems have completely transformed how I work. Everything connects — CRM, sourcing, client updates — it’s just seamless.
